Wardrobe + Styling

The idea of picking out a wardrobe for you and everyone else who will be part of the shoot can seem a little overwhelming. I completely understand and have put together some helpful tips to make selecting outfits easy and enjoyable.

First, for in-home sessions, I want you to be comfortable, like you’re actually just hanging out at home. Think bare feet, comfortable clothing, and remaining true to you!

For outdoor sessions, try to coordinate your outfits by color palette and try to avoid being really matchy. Remember cards in the 90’s where everyone would wear blue jeans and white t-shirt? That’s exactly what we want to avoid.

Style and Select

Also, all of my sessions include a styling service called Style and Select to help with outfit combinations if you need inspiration.

  • Styling Tips

    • Moms – Start with one outfit that you really like and feel wonderful in and then build the rest of the outfits from that.

    • Think layers and textures - hats, earrings, vests, scarfs, belts, blankets, bows and suspenders.

    • I would try to stick to 1 pattern per family (ex: plaid shirt, floral dress) and have the rest of the family wear solids.

  • Color

    • It’s best to coordinate colors for your family. Try not to match each other too much.

    • Choose two/three main complimentary colors. Stick with light, pale, or neutral colors for most of the family. Then part of the family can wear something darker/richer in color.

    • You can tie the pop of color throughout outfits for example if your child is in a fall burnt orange outfit then you wear burnt orange earrings or a headband.

    • Avoid fluorescent or really bright colors.

For Moms/Women

  • Flowy dresses, skirts or tops work beautifully on women and girls - they show motion and move with you as opposed to staying rigid.

  • Dress styles that cinch at the waist give women beautiful shape.

  • Layer your clothing and jewelry to add depth and texture - think hats, vests, scarves, belts, etc.

  • Be comfortable - steer clear of uncomfortable heels or tight clothing. You want to be able to move around and feel good.

  • Even robes work great for a more casual newborn or maternity session.

My favorite places to buy maxi dresses/skirts:

For Dads/Men

  • Chambray tops tend to look good with everything.

  • Plain t-shirts or sweaters are always great for boys and men.

  • No logos or words - stay timeless by avoiding words and logos that will date the images.

For Newborns

  • I prefer babies dressed very simply.

  • Plain white/solid colored bodysuits, swaddles, or just a diaper photograph beautifully.

  • Make sure the outfits you choose fit well. (usually newborn size)

  • The brands listed below have some of my favorite simple bodysuits, gowns, newborn outfits and swaddles. They tend to still be very simple and timeless but have some unique colors and styles.

For Toddlers

  • It is always fun to have your child in a pop of color or a playful accessory - think hats, boots, vests, scarves, bow ties, belts and suspenders.
